Connecting Risk-Takers, Doers, and the Makers of Things.

I know most of y'all mention lighting or catching the light or the light have to be right when shooting. I'm honestly wondering how this works. I know some people use flash cameras or create their own light and some just use natural light. Is it based on the subject matter and the expression your trying to capture or the light just determine the whole shot? And if you have some example that'll be a bonus for me at least to the discussion.

some of the best lighting in my opinion is in the movies. Look at the lighting in Swordfish club scene or mission impossible 2 for the action scene. the lighting in Miami Vice the movie. On the beach scene flat lighting very bright unless you want the evening mood of the lighting on the beach Sports Illustrated covers are flat bright lighting. Bad boys two had very dramatic lighting. I was trying to pull some of these scenes into the discussion. Comedy movies normally have flat none dramatic lighting. This is great souljah. keep the movement.

how do you put the video clips in. i was trying to do that in this section. I had never seen this movie now i have to rent it.
this a spike lee movie and you just got to find the embedded part in a video and copy and paste
I use lighting to create/ augment a mood. Sometimes the ambient light (existing light) has the mood I want and I do not have to create it. Most of the time I use some sort of light modifier, whether it is additional lights or a reflector. It also goes back to the thread regarding whether you plan or just catch what is there. If you have visualized what you want to create, then you use the lighting appropriate to capture that imagery.
this is an out-take from an editorial on purses/handbags... I wanted to highlight the purse.

use of lights to create a much more moody image

use of additional lights with the ambient

no additional lights
that's real fly. I know many photographers i've been around have certain areas in the city or diffrent locations they like to shoot because at a certain time of the day or night, the natural light give off a real good effect to the pictures there taking without adding to much of a touch up on the computer. Is that the case with the photographers here?
I use ALL of it. The ambient light in certain areas in certain times of day, strobes, reflectors yada-yada-yada. If you have enough equip, which unless you are movie company you probably don't, you can create any lighting situation you want. I don't use the computer (retouch) to change lighting unless I screwed up. I use the computer to retouch wrinkles, eliminate unwanted elements or pump up or reduce color. If I am working on changing lighting effects, I have gone terribly wrong or I am working on a photo "illustration" (as compared to a photograph).
It really depends on what discipline you pursue: Photojournalism, Fine Art, landscapes, Photo Illustration. All of these have certain aesthetics which determines how you approach your craft. It also depends on style. One of the reasons I am a photographer is to travel and see different people and places. I detest fake backgrounds (detest is too weak for how much I really hate them) I see no point in being a photographer if you are going to spend all your time on the computer creating something that is wholly unreal. There are others that don't have a problem with that.
word, i appreciate the feedback. Yea, I know the travel part and meeting people really help capture the look you want for the photo and client
