Barack Made HISTORY, now what about YOU?

I am proud of President Elect Barack Obama, as are most Americans! What this man has been able to achieve was something that most people (including myself) thought was impossible! What I hope and pray is that Pres. Barack has planted in our minds that ALL things are possible!

But hold on now, El Presidente Obama just like his friend Oprah can't lift you up alone, no you've got to get out and do the WORK! Hard work, often times that work is thankless and painful, but you must find support early on, well wishers that believe and fortify you while you're uncovering the path on your journey! On my own journey to personal truth I've had some great support. Friends and family, were definitely there, but ultimately it was two books that allowed me to get out of my own way and understand that it was my RIGHT to shine, that I had the audacity to be BEVY in FULL COLOR! Those books are "The Artist Way" and "The Four Agreements", these two books I have read countless times in the past four years.

I started on that path of creative and artistic freedom four years ago and haven't looked back (well maybe I peeked over my shoulder once or twice)! However, in my life I never felt that race defined me or limited me in my choices, granted I worked in advertising, publishing and fashion, really liberal fields but none the less many people find these genres rife with racism.

So many young people still come up to me and ask how I was able to create relationships with the top fashion houses or become the Senior Director of Fashion for Rolling Stone and now they ask how do I get all these fab fashion folks to attend "Dinner With Bevy" ! They want to know, aren't "they" shady, don't "they" try to keep you down, don't you feel alienated by "them" because often times you're the only one in the room! The answer is always a resounding no! First of all my success and self worth was never measured by my popularity with anyone (I was a follower in junior high school and never again) and most importantly I never held any one person's opinion to be worth more than anyone else's and certainly not my own! I dance to my own beat and it's a funky one, so I've always kept it moving, grooving and rolling!

But I digress, what I want to know is now that Barack has shown you that anything is possible, now that Barack has shown you that you can overcome racism by simply being the best and not dwelling on the fact that "they" don't like you! Now that Barack has stood up to a modern day virtual mob crowd and come out shining like the Prince that he is, what will your excuse be?

The answer is that you no longer have an excuse! I've been thinking about writing a novel for a minute and I've got an outline already developed, I'm going to work on that immediately. I've been so consumed with making sure that "Dinner WIth Bevy" is a success (real talk it's my main revenue stream) that I haven't taken an acting, improv or writing class all this year, that's a shame and it's going to end! I'm taking a class of some sort when I return from Los Angeles!

Many of us won't lead exceptional lives, I mean there can only be one president every four years and between the questionable boyfriends that I've had over the years, to the many inflammatory blogs that I've written where I talk about those relationships, I probably don't have a shot at the Presidency! But that doesn't mean I have to live a mediocre life, I simply refuse to, no I WON'T! I have no excuse, my gifts are abundant and the road has already been paved for me to have a much smoother trip than my 80 and 83 year old parents!

Barack made HISTORY and I'm going to follow his lead and make an exceptional life for myself, what about YOU?

I am just reading this Ms. Smith. It is amazing that so many people are asking this question right now. It appears in a time of great strain, more people are inspired than defeated. Just when cupboards get bare I see folks inviting others over for leftovers and potlucks. I see young people (I work with Jr. High and High Schoolers) not taking "No" for an answer when taking on new projects, etc. I am watching my mother take on completing the work for her license to be a therapist. I am seeing friends, who have recently been laid off, FINALLY pursue their first love(s) because they "have nothing to lose." It is truly amazing.

There's this one quote from President Obama's inaugural speech that stays with me (because I always am up to that next BIG thing and being met with criticism to be "realistic"): "Now, there are some who question the scale of our ambitions — who suggest that our system cannot tolerate too many big plans. Their memories are short. For they have forgotten ... what free men and women can achieve when imagination is joined to common purpose, and necessity to courage."

I am not sure where you are, but if in New York, I have some extraordinary young people that'd love to hear they many jewels you have to share. We are 28 days into this year, with only 337 to go... Make each count.

Love to the 21 Century Hustle Fam.

Barack Obama has set a high standard and provided an answer for all those hopeless children, haters, nay-sayers and non-believers. Shirley Chisholm (1972), Jesse Jackson (1984 and 1988) and Al Sharpton’s (2004) attempts at the presidency came at a time when America was not ready to accept or even conceive an African-American in the role of Commander and Chief. President Obama has not only changed the complexion of the presidency, he has also supplied abundant inspiration to many and all with “Yes, we can” and proved it.

The excuse of “one man being held down by another man” is now diminished, so under-achievers cannot apply the excuse to his or her lack of achievement. On the evening of November 4, 2008, my spirit was lifted, my inspiration increased, and I stood a bit taller as our new President made the speech to bring tears to many who yearned to see the “dawn of a new day”. The next day, a choice to live life to the fullest, inspire and aid others to achieve greatness, and not allow adversity to overwhelm or overcome motivation or goals was made. “Adversity causes some men to break; others to break records.” - William A Ward. Barack Obama has overcome adversity to break records and has inspired me to greatness!
