The paradigms for communication , collaboration, socializing and running business are changing under our noses. Command and control is out while collaboration and innovation are in. With all these changes, the definition of successful leadership is changing also.
For instance, traditional thought says that a leader should be out in front as "The Visionary". Is that still true? This morning I was listening to a podcast from Harvard Business School entitled "Where will we find tomorrow's leaders", whose guest, Professor Linda Hill, spoke about "Leading from Behind". Her point was that effective leaders have to be behind their team, setting them up to function collaboratively, which will ultimately inspire innovation. According to Ms. Hill, leaders as visionary gods are out, and leaders as innovation catalysts are in.
Using that as an example, how do you all think an effective leader looks and acts nowadays? What are your top three attributes for today's CHO (Chief Hustlin' Officer)?
Mine are:
1) Be Real (a.k.a. open, honest and transparent). The progressive hustla isn't afraid to open up and expose weakness around themselves or their companies. It builds trust and will only push you to try harder. And if that makes you feel uncomfortable, see someone who can help you deal with your fears.
2) Lead From Behind (yeah, i borrowed that from Linda Hill). It's explained above and I believe it's true. There is something new under the sun every day, from organizational management to products. Leading from behind will allow your team to mine them for you. How cool is that?
3) Be Nice This is old school but still relevant. True Hustla's respect others and treat them kindly. They have GREAT kharma. And that's a big reason why they're successful. And...in a networked society this is even more relevant, because there are plenty of public forums for people to expose your evil ways. You might be asking yourselves, what about all those loathsome loot-loaded leaders. And to that, I would ask you to question your definition of success.
