21st Century Hustle

Connecting Risk-Takers, Doers, and the Makers of Things.

The paradigms for communication , collaboration, socializing and running business are changing under our noses. Command and control is out while collaboration and innovation are in. With all these changes, the definition of successful leadership is changing also.

For instance, traditional thought says that a leader should be out in front as "The Visionary". Is that still true? This morning I was listening to a podcast from Harvard Business School entitled "Where will we find tomorrow's leaders", whose guest, Professor Linda Hill, spoke about "Leading from Behind". Her point was that effective leaders have to be behind their team, setting them up to function collaboratively, which will ultimately inspire innovation. According to Ms. Hill, leaders as visionary gods are out, and leaders as innovation catalysts are in.

Using that as an example, how do you all think an effective leader looks and acts nowadays? What are your top three attributes for today's CHO (Chief Hustlin' Officer)?

Mine are:

1) Be Real (a.k.a. open, honest and transparent). The progressive hustla isn't afraid to open up and expose weakness around themselves or their companies. It builds trust and will only push you to try harder. And if that makes you feel uncomfortable, see someone who can help you deal with your fears.

2) Lead From Behind (yeah, i borrowed that from Linda Hill). It's explained above and I believe it's true. There is something new under the sun every day, from organizational management to products. Leading from behind will allow your team to mine them for you. How cool is that?

3) Be Nice This is old school but still relevant. True Hustla's respect others and treat them kindly. They have GREAT kharma. And that's a big reason why they're successful. And...in a networked society this is even more relevant, because there are plenty of public forums for people to expose your evil ways. You might be asking yourselves, what about all those loathsome loot-loaded leaders. And to that, I would ask you to question your definition of success.

Hey Johnathan- Great post! Do you have the link to that show. I would like to hear it...

Leadership in the 21st Century is definitely in a state of flux, yet I believe the core values of a great leader will continue to apply. I think the thing that will change the most is society's definition of a leader. There has and will always be great leaders that lead from "behind," (and from every other position for that matter).I think it is our need to place a "look" to things that has boxed us into what a leader should look and act like, when all along the leaders are leading.

Once I hear the podcast i'll post again.

But My top three Qualitys a Good Leader must possess are:

1. A Constitution-Like Omar from the Wire said " A man's got to have a code!"

2. Move the "crowd-a-bility"-A leader motivates their troops into action, either, by creating an environment that fosters action or by example. They get people working.

3. A Birds Eye View (Vision)Most "can't see the forest for trees." A leader must have the ability to look at group from a macro point of view to see the organization as a whole and to pinpoint where to strike. This also puts the leader in a position to see further down the road, giving them the ability to adjust to fluctuations in the market.
reallly late: but quick point: when Barack announced his Financial advisors, after the press conference he let his entire staff exit before him. at first people are like yeah ok, and? well i'm big on nonverbals...and that speaks volumes to the humility in Barack's leadership.

1. collaborate - successful team on board and off
2. strategy - focus, tough skin
3. know your follower: in order to lead, you must know how to follow. avoid the common "i'm the boss"mistakes
