21st Century Hustle

Connecting Risk-Takers, Doers, and the Makers of Things.

When most people think of leaving a "good job" the scenario is usually like this: You don't like the people you work for. You are bored with the work. You are just wearing the mask to get to the 1st & the 15, etc. Has anyone been in the scenario where you made the most money you ever made.. having the most things you've ever had, but you're still not satisfied with your position in the game.

For me, I started re-evaluating my position after about 5 years working for VIBE. "The Vibes" was a great time. I "seemed" to be free as a bird. Getting money. Living bi-coastal. Corporate card, and a in-house family that worked hard and played hard. But after a few life changing moments where I got to see some real fly living. I realized that I was not living up to ME. I was not the same dude that moved to NY with $200 and big, over-sized dreams scrapping to make them happen. I'd gotten to a point where I was seeing my dreams become more tangible yet, ironically, smaller.

There I was frolicking through life. Nobu on Tuesday, chow on Thursday, ha ha...Jump on a plane monday Chow LA..Then hit the circuit-Super bowl, All Star, Magic, spring this, memorial day that...

To reference The Lion King... I'd become Lion King Simba. Gone astray from my purpose just doing it up in life...So once I knew what it was, I thought about what Mufassa told Simba. It was time for me to take my place in the Circle of Life.

Has anyone felt that way before? Like you are doing it, but not really! Because you are playing below your skill level and not pushing yourself to do what you really know in your heart you can do?

My career as a TV News Videographer wasn't enough. I enjoyed it to a certain extent, because I was able to tell stories on a daily basis. However, over a period of time I began to realize it wasn't enough. I had a burning passion to tell the stories that I wanted and felt like I needed to tell. I am traveling that road now. And although my journey has just began, I am already more fulfilled, and more at peace. Don't get me wrong, the struggles of an entrepreneur/freelancer are challenging. But at the end of the day there is a satisfying feeling of purpose. Power to all those with passion - whether inside the corporate machine or outside of it - aim to satisfy your passion. If not, it'll burn and burn until it eats you up... Much Respect to Muhammad & the 21st Century Hustle. I'll holla...
You know you just have to live up to the purpose and thats the part that splits you in half. On one side you you have bills that come every month, kids, wife, etc. on the other is the vision and purpose and in the middle you got the unknown. You gotta get over the fear of the unknown and get to the other side.
I truly understand this... I was a barber making good money daily... I was always on planes and dippin off to a different city... I was throwing parties on the side.. and making more money in a night then I would in a week at the shop... I got caught up in the cash... but in reality I was making pennies... everybody was benefitting from my grind... I decided that it's time to be a owner, I'm working on getting a lounge in the not so distant future. Find your passion and figure out how make money from it...
because charity starts at home... and your dreams are universal... Peace Ali & The 21stCenturyHustle Family
MB!
In that business, owners make all the $, and take all the risks. Get the lounge yo and work harder on that than you ever promoted someone else's club.
I feel you all the way around on this one my man. I felt that way when I was putting in work for Nike and now I really feel that way putting it down for AT&T. The hardest part about it all while you are in the hustle you take on parallel personality in order to sustain your grind. Now the hard part about it all is knowing you are playing WELL below your capabilities, but you can't quit the game for whatever reason (family, money, etc). It's almost like MJ settling for being a 6th man or Jay Z settling for being Jazz's sidekick.

Knowing you are destined to be a Go Getter, Visionary, Mogul or an Entrepreneur is both a gift and a curse. The gift is knowing you are destined to be one of the aforementioned. The curse is either not knowing how to get their, or waiting on someone else's time or dime till they can get you their.

My favorite article talks about everything I learned I learned in the first verse of The Sucka MC Rap and it talked about the importance of having friends and I tend to agree. However, I would add that not only is it important to have friends, but to have friends who understand YOUR Sense of urgency. See real friends never question your preparedness, but their clocks may not be synced with yours and the one thing ALL Go Getters, Visionaries, Moguls and Entrepreneurs share is the sense yesterday is TOO LATE and TOMORROW aint fast enough.

Holla if you hear me.
Yo Dro, you know you can get whatever you strive for. You put all kinds of other people in place to do thier thing its only a matter of time before that comes back around for you. You just have to be willing to take the chance when the opportunity shows up. Just like you did when you ran for office. That was just the beginning It don't stop their.

pahreeeeeeeeeeeeach! that statement hit home for me. sometimes we have to lead or leave by example. fly like an eagle, wanting the friend/spouse/sig' other/etc. to get wind beneath their wings and soar too. alas, some trips are meant to be taken alone. i'm on that journey as i type this...
You are absolutely correct in that, whether you make your dreams and ambitions happen or not is really is on YOU and no one else. In this stage your heart and soul will fly alone . And on that flight you will eventually find things in life that support and inspire your dreams and ambitions(books, magazines, people, places, things, etc.).

As you start becoming one with yourself and your dreams the more you will realize that the journey is not a lonely one. It is filled with all of the books, magazines, people, places, things, etc. that inspired and supported the journey and made it worth taking.
Whoo! That's fire right there! Irvine. I must also add that its not just good enough knowing your a go getter, visionary, mogul or entrepreneur unless you "get, get, get it!" There's nothing worst than seeing your vision and/or project being put out by someone who has no fear.

As for the curse I don't think it has anything to do with not knowing how to get there. I believe we know how to get there, but fear immobilizes us or as you said "you can't quit the game for what ever reason (family, money, etc)." Speaking from my own personal experience - I did my homework, I knew what was out their. But I was looking outside myself to find those answers, instead what I should have been doing is look for those answers within me.

So knowing not how to get there and waiting on someone else time or dime til you get is an excuse. Because as you stated "ALL Go Getters, Visionaries, Moguls and Entrepreneurs share is the sense yesterday is TOO LATE and TOMORROW aint fast enough."

Yes. I feel it all the time. I want to push myself to do so much more, and often feel that the platforms I write for can't keep up.

Over the six-plus years I was at VIBE, I was continually challenged with new opportunities, but also so wrapped up in the brand and daily grind that I often lost sight of the interests and intentions that originally brought me there. And now that I'm out on my own, I still wonder when the time will come that I can make good money without selling my soul a little bit to do so....
We talk about this all the time. The work you are putting in know is just practice for you. The game is really going begin as soon as you decide on YOUR project. Once you take your show into your own hands and create the project of your dreams, who can to stop you, except you?
This post is powerful. I was just saying some of the same things to my teammate(wife'). What are we going to do to show our appreciation to life.
